| Smith Anxious to Perform |
| By playerpress.com wire services / June 12, 2009 |
Antonio Smith had a big season in 2008.
Playing for the Arizona Cardinals, Smith, a 6-4, 285-pound defensive end, played in every game and was credited with 41 tackles, 3 forced fumbles and 4 sacks. He also registered a sack and a forced fumble during Super Bowl XLIII in Tampa Bay against the eventual champion Pittsburgh Steelers.
So when Arizona chose not to re-sign the unrestricted free agent, he had no trouble finding work and hooked up with the Houston Texans.
Smith will replace recently released defensive end Anthony Weaver.
The Oklahoma State product said he cannot wait to play the right defensive end position opposite Mario Williams, who was drafted first overall in 2006, and Smith believes they will help each other.
"I watched him and teams like to double team him," Smith said. "So that must mean I'm going to get single teamed most of the time so hey, I'll have fun and once teams realize you can't single team either one of us, they're going to have to find a way to get us blocked."
Smith joins a line full of first-round draft picks with the Texans. Along with Williams, who was drafted first overall, he joins tackles Amobi Okoye, picked 10th overall in 2007, and Travis Johnson, picked 16th overall in 2005.
One of the linebackers is Brian Cushing, drafted 15th overall this year.
Smith has 125 tackles and 14½ sacks in his five-year career.
